Let’s be honest with ourselves for a minute. First, Valentine’s Day is an overrated and unnecessary holiday (unless you’re in grade 4 and trying to get that special someone’s attention). Second, not everyone truly loves the house they live in. Some people compromised on their wants and needs when they bought their house and it’s never really felt like home, or maybe your life has changed since you moved in and what was important then isn’t important now.

Maybe you felt rushed or had a timeline so you settled? Maybe you didn’t check out the neighbourhood thoroughly and after moving in you realized the location isn’t that great? Maybe you had big ideas for a renovation, but never got around to them?

Whatever the reason, if you don’t love where you live…you can change that and fall madly, deeply in love with your home again. It is possible. Here’s 4 things you can do if you don’t love where you live:

  1. Paint: Never underestimate the power of paint and what it can do to completely change the appearance and feeling of a home. Soft, warm colors can create a space that’s inviting and comfortable. Bright, loud colors can make a room or space the place to hang out and have some fun. No matter what colors you choose, paint makes a significant difference and can give a house a complete facelift that changes the ‘feel’ and look of a home.
  2. Renovate: Making changes to your home on the inside or outside can make a big difference in how you feel about your home. A renovation can be as significant as removing or adding walls and changing the floorplan, to as simple as changing out light fixtures or cupboard door handles. Perhaps it’s adding an island in the kitchen, or changing the carpet to vinyl plank? You can go extreme or keep it basic, but no matter what you do for a renovation, making changes to your home can give you butterflies again and get you excited to walk through the front door.
  3. Refurnish: Are you still sitting on the same couch you were given as a hand me down from your parents or a friend? Is your kitchen table the same one you’ve been sitting around for a decade? It could be time to go shopping and buy some new furniture that’s a better fit for your home and lifestyle. New furniture will breathe life into a home, even if it’s just coffee tables, new bedding or some new bookshelves or mirrors on the wall. It doesn’t have to be drastic, but new furniture can make a big difference.
  4. Sell: No one is holding you hostage in your current home (I hope). If you really don’t love where you live, sell and find a new home you will love. Selling your home will allow for a fresh start completely. You could end up in a new neighbourhood, with a new home style, new surroundings and a better fit for your lifestyle. It’s a sellers market right now which means you’ll likely sell for more than you paid and you have thousands of dollars in equity to use towards a new home you will LOVE.

You spend a lot of time in your house and should love where you live. Life is too short to walk through a door everyday and into a house you don’t enjoy or like. These 4 things can help you fall in love with your home again. They all require varying levels of work, but the pay off can be huge.
