For some people, the idea of selling their home in the winter isn’t very appealing. They worry about moving in the cold, dealing with ice and snow and everything else that’s unpredictable about an Alberta winter. Despite these potential drawbacks to why you might not want to sell, there are some distinct advantages to selling your home in the winter:

The winter provides a time to boost your homes curb appeal with decorations, lights, yard décor and a welcoming wreath on your front door. When potential buyers drive up to view your home, you can instantly catch their attention and show them how much pride you take in home ownership. A house that stands out from the others with Christmas lights, a giant snowman or snow globe in the front yard, will leave a positive impression on most buyers and have your home be more memorable than the ‘boring’ one that doesn’t have any decorations.  
  2. Serious Buyers: If people are wanting to look at your house in the winter…chances are they’re not just ‘kicking tires’ and looking to kill some time. They’re serious buyers who are likely pre-approved, motivated to purchase and willing to consider making an offer. Regardless of their reason for wanting to buy your house, they’re ready to act and your home could be exactly what they’re looking for.
  3. Stand Out: With fewer homes on the market and less competition for you as a seller, your house can stand out and get noticed. Compared to the spring/summer market when more homes are typically listed, by listing in the winter your home will stand out and get noticed.
  4. Start Spring in a new home: When you sell your house in the winter, it usually means you’ll be buying in the winter also. That means that when the weather warms up, the snow starts melting and people start thinking about selling their house, you’ll already be ahead of the game and comfortably settled in your new home. You won’t have to be part of the ‘spring market’, but instead you’ll be able to go shopping and start decorating your new yard so it’s ready for the summer.

These four benefits of selling in the winter are only available this time of year. Yes, it might be more inconvenient to sell and have to move in the winter months, but in our opinion these benefits outweigh the potential disadvantages.
